Do you keep a migraine kit in your bag?
Having mine with me wherever I go has made such a huge difference not only in my migraine management, but in reducing anxiety! Knowing that I always have everything I need with me to take care of myself is super comforting.
Inside I carry things to manage pain, nausea, bright lights and loud noises, and of course things to keep me hydrated and satiated.
Here’s a list of all my goodies! Note: the following contains affiliate links – if you use them to make a purchase, I will receive a portion of the sales. I only link to products I personally use and enjoy!
1. Magnesium Lotion
I’ve been loving this Magnesium lotion recently – I use it whenever I feel any super mild migraine symptoms coming on like fatigue, headache, or confusion. I like to rub it into my neck and shoulders, which gives me a great excuse to give myself a mini shoulder massage! It does have natural fragrance from shea butter, but it doesn’t bother me at all (and I’m pretty sensitive to smells, like most of us).
2. Ginger Oil
This ginger oil is a life-saver when I’m out and about and can’t prepare a cup of ginger tea. I use ginger oil when my migraine episodes are still super mild so I can prevent them from getting worse!
3. Essential Oils
Having essential oils with me wherever I go is perfect to mask triggering smells and can even alleviate some early migraine symptoms! My two favorites are lemon and peppermint – I use lemon as a mood lifter and energizer, while peppermint is great for reducing head pain and even helping with nausea.
4. Ginger Mints
Another form of ginger I love to keep on hand are these ginger mints – they have simple ingredients and are great in a pinch for mild nausea (and bad breath – heyo!)
5. Sound Muffling Ear Plugs
These ear plugs are AMAZING. I spent a long time trying to find ear buds that would filter out loud sounds while still allowing me to hear conversations, and these work so well! They even come with two different sizes which is great for my annoyingly small ear canals. These have been a game changer for me!
I always have a snack with me when I head out the door, preferably one that combines carbs with protein and/or fat. This helps keep my blood sugar nice and steady, which is good not only for migraine but your health in general! These Perfect bars are my go-to – I like the kid-sized ones because I never seem to finish the bigger bars.
7. Refillable Water Bottle
My water bottle is basically attached to my hip wherever I go because hydration is so important! I’ve been through so many over the years and this is hands down my favorite. I get the one without a nozzle so it’s easier to clean. Just a heads up though, if you have issues with taste changes or are sensitive to metallics, you may want to go with a glass water bottle instead of this aluminum one.
Sunglasses are nice to have for actual sun, as well as for when bright lights start to bother you. I bought a pair from Target that fit over my prescription glasses so I didn’t have to buy an expensive pair of prescription sunglasses – but that’s definitely a good option too!
9. Pain Meds
And of course, I always have my prescription and OTC pain meds with me for when all of the previous stuff doesn’t work. My go-to’s right now are Maxalt and Naproxen – not perfect but they do the job when necessary.
10. Anti-Nausea Meds
I’m fortunate enough to have a few pills of Zofran stashed away from my last urgent care visit, and I keep them with me for rare instance when ginger and peppermint don’t take care of my nausea.
